Irish Red Cross Launches Winter Emergency Appeal for Vulnerable Communities

January 15, 2026 4 min read Nationwide

The Irish Red Cross has launched its annual winter emergency appeal to support vulnerable communities across Ireland during the cold months. The appeal aims to raise €2 million to provide essential supplies, heating support, and emergency assistance.

Supporting Those Most in Need

Winter months present unique challenges for Ireland's most vulnerable populations, including elderly people living alone, homeless individuals, families struggling with fuel poverty, and refugees and asylum seekers. The Irish Red Cross winter appeal provides direct support to these communities.

Services include emergency heating fuel vouchers, warm clothing and blankets, food parcels, and welfare checks for isolated elderly residents. Red Cross volunteers conduct regular home visits to ensure vulnerable individuals have access to essential supplies.

"No one should have to choose between heating and eating. Our winter appeal ensures that Ireland's most vulnerable have the support they need to stay safe and warm."

— Secretary General, Irish Red Cross

Volunteer Network

The Irish Red Cross operates through a network of over 3,000 volunteers across 90 branches nationwide. During winter months, volunteer activity increases significantly as teams respond to weather-related emergencies and provide welfare support.

The organization is also recruiting additional volunteers for the winter period, with training provided in first aid, welfare support, and emergency response.

How to Help

Donations can be made online at redcross.ie, by phone, or at any Bank of Ireland branch. Corporate partnerships are also welcome, with several Irish businesses already pledging support for the campaign.
