Two Men Arrested Following Discovery of Man’s Body in Doneraile, Co Cork

Gardaí have arrested two men in connection with the death of a man in Doneraile, near Mallow, Co Cork.

The body of the victim, a man in his 40s, was discovered at Rockview Terrace in the early hours of Sunday morning. A post-mortem examination is expected to take place at Cork University Hospital.

The two suspects — one in his 20s and the other in his late teens — were detained on Monday at Garda stations within the county.

The deceased has been named locally as Barry Daly, a 44-year-old father of four who worked as a postman in Mallow. It is understood he was assaulted outside his home in Doneraile, approximately 13 kilometres from Mallow.

According to local reports, Gardaí believe Mr Daly was attacked by a group of men armed with a golf club after an altercation earlier in the night. Mr Daly and his teenage son are said to have been followed home from the village centre, roughly 750 metres away, after socialising in Eily’s Bar. The incident reportedly occurred following celebrations in the area after Doneraile’s victory over Ballyclough in the North Cork Junior B hurling final on Saturday.

Investigators suspect a confrontation took place outside the bar around 1am before the fatal assault occurred. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly afterwards but were unable to revive Mr Daly, who was pronounced dead around 2am.

A section of the area was sealed off, and Gardaí have since recovered a golf club believed to have been used in the attack. The item has been sent for forensic testing, including DNA and fingerprint analysis.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster conducted an initial examination at the scene before the body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a full post-mortem.

Detectives have begun gathering CCTV footage from the area and carrying out door-to-door inquiries in an effort to identify witnesses to the assault or to any earlier incidents in the pub.
