Starting a new life in a foreign country is a daunting challenge. For many Syrian families fleeing conflict and persecution, the journey to safety is fraught with hardship. Yet, Irish communities have a long-standing tradition of welcoming those in need, offering warmth and solidarity to help them rebuild their lives.
Through the Community Sponsorship Ireland programme, local groups can extend a hand of friendship and directly assist vulnerable families in settling into their new homes. This initiative, led by the Irish Red Cross and supported by Nasc, the Irish Refugee Council, and Doras, empowers communities to make a tangible difference in the lives of refugees.
Currently, 15 at-risk Syrian families are awaiting accommodation in Lebanon. These families have endured significant trauma, losing homes, livelihoods, and loved ones. Their safety in their home country is no longer viable, and they seek refuge and a fresh start in Ireland.
By becoming a sponsor, your community can provide these families with the stability and support they need to thrive. Sponsors receive comprehensive training and guidance, ensuring they are well-equipped to assist families in their integration journey.
Since the programme's inception, six Community Sponsorship Groups have been established in Cork, Kerry, Offaly, Dublin, Waterford, and Galway, with 11 more in development. These groups are making a profound impact, offering hope and a sense of belonging to families starting anew.
Your involvement can help turn a family's uncertainty into a hopeful future. To learn more about how you can support or join a Community Sponsorship Group, visit the Irish Red Cross website or contact your local community centre.
