An Garda Síochána Expands Community Policing Initiative Nationwide
An Garda Síochána has announced the expansion of its community policing initiative to all 28 Garda divisions, strengthening local engagement and building stronger relationships between Gardaí and the communities they serve.
Building Trust Through Community Engagement
The expanded community policing model places dedicated Community Gardaí in every area, ensuring consistent and visible presence in local neighborhoods. These officers are assigned long-term to specific areas, allowing them to build meaningful relationships with residents, businesses, and community groups.
The initiative includes regular community meetings, school visits, and partnership programmes with local organizations. Gardaí are trained in restorative justice practices and community mediation techniques.
"Community policing is at the heart of modern policing. When communities and Gardaí work together, we create safer neighborhoods for everyone."
— Garda Commissioner
Key Programme Elements
The programme includes the deployment of 300 additional Community Gardaí, enhanced community alert schemes, youth diversion programmes, and dedicated liaison officers for vulnerable groups including elderly residents, minority communities, and those affected by domestic violence.
A new mobile app will allow residents to connect directly with their local Community Garda, report non-emergency concerns, and receive safety updates specific to their area.
Proven Results
Pilot programmes in Dublin, Cork, and Limerick have shown significant improvements in community satisfaction and crime prevention. Areas with dedicated community policing have seen a 23% reduction in anti-social behavior and a 35% increase in community reporting of suspicious activity.
