Warehouse near Donegal Town — Aftermath of the overnight fire
Firefighters from across Donegal responded to a large industrial fire at a warehouse near Donegal Town. Multiple fire brigades and more than 50 firefighters attended the overnight incident as flames and smoke were visible for miles. No injuries were reported.
In the late hours of Thursday, 22 May 2026, Donegal County Fire Service received the first of numerous emergency calls reporting a large fire at an industrial warehouse on the outskirts of Donegal Town. The blaze escalated rapidly, prompting a major multi-brigade response that drew resources from across the county.
The first crews arrived to find the warehouse fully engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading quickly through the structure. Witnesses described the night sky glowing orange and red, with thick plumes of black smoke visible from as far as Ballyshannon and Bundoran, over 15 kilometres away.
Fire crews from Donegal Town, Ballyshannon, Bundoran, Ballybofey, and Letterkenny were mobilised to the scene, alongside a command support unit and water tankers. Over 50 firefighters worked in rotating shifts throughout the night, battling the inferno with multiple pump appliances and aerial water delivery systems.
A Donegal County Fire Service spokesperson said the scale of the fire required an "all hands on deck" approach, with crews working tirelessly to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent commercial properties and nearby woodland. Firefighters faced challenging conditions, including strong winds that fanned the flames and limited visibility due to heavy smoke.
The National Ambulance Service was placed on standby at the scene as a precautionary measure, while An Garda Síochána closed several local roads and established an exclusion zone around the site. Residents in the surrounding area were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke.
Remarkably, no injuries were reported in connection with the incident. The warehouse was unoccupied at the time the fire broke out, and the swift evacuation of the surrounding area by Gardaí ensured the safety of nearby residents and workers.
A fire service commander on scene commended the crews for their professionalism, noting that containing a fire of this magnitude without any casualties was a testament to the training and coordination of the Donegal fire service personnel.
The warehouse, which belonged to a locally owned manufacturing and distribution business, has been completely destroyed by the fire. Early assessments suggest the total loss of the building, its contents, and associated equipment. The business, which employed over 20 people from the Donegal Town area, now faces an uncertain future.
Local councillors have expressed their shock and support, with one describing the fire as a devastating blow to the local economy. "This business has been a cornerstone of employment in the Donegal Town area for years. Our thoughts are with the owners, employees, and their families at this incredibly difficult time," a local representative said.
Donegal County Fire Service's Fire Investigation Unit, in cooperation with An Garda Síochána, has launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire. Forensic examination of the scene began on the morning of 23 May 2026, with investigators working to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.
At this stage, investigators have not ruled anything out, and Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area between 10:00 pm and midnight on 22 May to come forward with any information, including dashcam or mobile phone footage.
The local community has already begun mobilising to support the 20-plus workers now facing an uncertain future. A community fundraising initiative has been launched by the Donegal Town Chamber of Commerce, with local businesses pledging donations and offering temporary employment opportunities to those affected.
The Department of Social Protection has also been notified and is working to ensure affected employees have access to income support as quickly as possible. A community support meeting is being organised at the Abbey Centre in Donegal Town for later this week.
