On 15 August 2024, Father Paul Murphy was returning to the barracks at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa when he was approached at the main gate by an individual who requested assistance. After lowering his vehicle window, Fr Murphy was attacked with a knife.
Private Ciara Shanahan, who was on gate duty at the time, immediately raised the alarm and attempted to deter the assailant despite being unarmed.
The Guard Commander, Corporal Daniel Padden, alongside Private Dylan Geraghty, responded to the unfolding incident. Verbal warnings were issued, followed by warning shots. Private Geraghty then physically restrained the attacker, removing the immediate threat, while Corporal Padden maintained a defensive position prepared to escalate force if required.
Following the medal presentation, the Minister and Chief of Staff are scheduled to address media in a doorstep briefing. The Minister will then officially open a new accommodation block at the University Students Accommodation Complex (USAC) within the barracks.
